The Hope for Africa Children's Choir arrived in Texas in mid-April and now is traveling in Kentucky on their four-month tour of the United States. The choir will perform at various sites throughout the Kentucky Conference. They will be part of the Missions and Ministry Celebration on June 3 at Annual Conference.
The 23 children who comprise the choir are ages 4 to 12 and come from poor villages and internally displaced persons camps in Uganda, which is part of the East Africa Annual Conference. Years of war and diseases including HIV/AIDS and malaria have ravaged the country, leaving many children orphaned. The ministries of the choir and the Humble School seek to help the orphans and other vulnerable children with education, nutritious food, and a safe place to live. A Volunteers in Mission team from Kentucky that traveled to Uganda in late 2007 attended the official launch of the choir.
The young choir members, under the direction of Lydia Namagembe and Tonny Mbowa, brought General Conference delegates to their feet during an April 28 session. The hard work the children had done learning English, music, and dances was reflected in their jubilant performance.
