A Tribute to "Ms. Mandlebaum"

September 18, 2012

“We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us.”

As the present Chief Executive Officer of Wesley House Community Services, I never formally met Ms. Helen Mandlebaum. Even though I never met her, it was as if I knew her through the fingerprint and legacy she left on people’s lives, the stories that I heard about lives that were changed long before I knew Wesley House.

Some define a legacy as “something that is transmitted or received from an ancestor or predecessor from the past.” John Maxwell asserts that there are two kinds of people. There are those that make things happen and those that asked what happened.

Ms. Mandlebaum was a person that “made things happen.” We at Wesley House stand on her shoulders and the foundation that she laid to “help people help themselves.”

Wesley House Community Services Board of Directors, Staff and Constituents present this tribute in honor of Ms. Mandlebaum taken from the words of Joyce Johnson Rouse:

We are standing on the shoulders of the one who came before us, Ms. Mandlebaum.
We are stronger for her courage and wiser for her words.
We have been lifted by her longing for a fair and brighter future.
We owe her gratitude for her lifelong vocation.
