The Sudanese Civil War was a conflict from 1983 to 2005. It’s estimated that two million people died. Data also suggests that four million people in southern Sudan were displaced because of the war. Nyalang Madut was 10 years old at the time, and one of those million people who was displaced. The civilian death toll in Sudan is one of the highest of any war since World War II, and was marked by a large number of human rights violations. These included slavery and mass killings. NYALANG MUDAT’s father fought and died in the war, and her Mother was killed while She and her brother were fleeing their Village in South Sudan. NYALANG and her brother were orphaned. NYALANG went to a camp in Kenya and was processed to come to the United States.
