During the months of August and September 2007, Faith United Methodist Church in Bowling Green, Kentucky participated in the 40 Days of Community Campaign as a follow-up to the 40 Days of Purpose Campaign which was conducted several years ago.
A kick-off brunch was held on Sunday, August 12.
As part of the 40 Days of Community, small groups met in members’ homes for six weeks to study and develop deeper relationships.
Each small group had a project to help someone in our community. Some of these included providing clothing for five children in one family, providing household items for a lady with disabilities, cleaning yards of elderly, working an outreach event with the Wesley Foundation at Western Kentucky University, a work project at the Wesley Foundation property, taking communion to shut-ins and area nursing homes, and a party for seniors at the Bowling Green Housing Authority.
For our churchwide project we teamed up with the Boys & Girls Club in Bowling Green. We painted three rooms, cleaned and arranged a storage room, and sorted children’s books. Shoes, socks, and personal care items were also collected. A new teen room was established, and members donated TVs, board games, video games, DVDs, DVD players, and several pieces of furniture.
A Celebration Sunday was held on September 30 to conclude the campaign. Members of the Boys & Girls Club and their families were invited to Faith Church for the morning service to celebrate what had been done during the previous six weeks. We heard stories of life-changing experiences as group members studied, shared, prayed, and worked together. Afterwards, lunch was held at the Boys & Girls Club for everyone.
Since the 40 Days of Community, almost every group has continued to meet and is continuing their outreach projects, plus each group has selected a project or ministry within the church to lead. God blessed us greatly as we learned, WE ARE BETTER TOGETHER.
