Cinderella’s Closet is a dream come true for many high school girls who look forward to feeling like a princess at their prom. Part of the youth ministry of Immanuel UMC (Covington District), this program provides formal dresses and accessories to financially disadvantaged girls for free.
Erin Peterson, founder of Cinderella’s Closet and a member of Immanuel, was inspired by a trip to a consignment store, where she overheard a shopper asking about a gently used gown. The girl wanted the dress for prom, but she and her foster mother couldn’t afford the $40 it cost. Peterson offered to purchase the dress for the young shopper, who expressed her thanks and said she would look “just like Cinderella.” Peterson wanted to give other girls a chance to have that experience.
Over 1,200 donated dresses later, Cinderella’s Closet opened its doors in 2007 and transformed 115 girls into princesses for their proms and spring dances. In its second year, Cinderella’s Closet plans to provide 400 girls with complete prom packages at no cost to the girls or their families. The girls are referred by churches, high schools, and community organizations in Northern Kentucky and Southeast Indiana.
Part of the Cinderella’s Closet experience is guidance from “Fairy Godmothers,” who help the girls select their dresses. There are also volunteers to make alterations and to provide snacks. The girls are lavished with hospitality, love, and grace and leave knowing they are cherished. In addition, this year there will be a prayer chapel, where people will pray throughout the event. Prayer requests from the girls and from the volunteers will be prayed for during this time.
On March 14, Cinderella’s Closet will hold an open house from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Immanuel UMC, 2551 Dixie Highway, Lakeside Park, KY. In addition to the open house, girls will be outfitted at church on two weekends in March. You can read more about Cinderella’s Closet at www.cinderellasclosetnky.org.
