New Song Music Festival 2008 was quite a way to celebrate the start of a new school year in Kentucky. On Friday, August 8 and Saturday, August 9 the campgrounds at Loucon Training and Retreat Center were transformed into an open air revival site, but a revival site with a twist. With speakers pounding, artists jamming, and young people moving to the beat, New Song reaches a new level of evangelism, a level that resonates with many of the youth and young adults in attendance.
Friday night provided a full slate of Christian performers, such as Eleventy Seven, Sanctus Real, and Jeremy Camp, to name a few. The crowd responded well to the opening two groups, but everyone knew that this Friday night was going to belong to Jeremy Camp.
After words of inspiration and encouragement from the speaker for the weekend, Mike Williams, Jeremy Camp took to the stage to take all in attendance at Loucon to a higher spiritual plain. Jeremy Camp and his band provided praise and worship that was positively infectious and had both young and old caught up in the moment and the rhythm. After starting out red hot, Jeremy moved right into one of his more hard-hitting songs, "Take My Life" and then continued with his single "Tonight." He then paused to talk to the audience from his heart about his family, parenthood, and his love for Jesus. When Jeremy Camp finished, the crowd knew that surely the Spirit had been moving at Camp Loucon.
On a beautiful Saturday morning when the weather couldn’t get much better, the day began with praise and worship led by Steve Barnum. As the campgrounds began to fill up for a second day of spiritual festivities, the bands started pumping the air full of high octane praise music.
Saturday was a day when pretty much every musical taste was satisfied; from bagpipes in the morning to Christian rap at night all the bases were touched. The two overwhelming crowd favorites seemed to be Skillet and Toby Mac, with the featured speaker sandwiched between the two. With a lead-in by Skillet, speaker Mike Williams connected with the young people on a level that must have resonated with many, because when the altar was opened for professions of faith and prayer, many persons came.
Beneath the showmanship and wonderful music, the mission of New Song is to bring young people to Christ. Mission accomplished.
Skillet performed at this year's New Song Music Festival.
