On April 9, 2010, Nathaniel United Methodist Mission in Lexington received the Lauren K. Weinberg Humanitarian Award from the Kentucky Conference for Community and Justice.

When making the award the KCCJ noted:

“For the last 55 years the Kentucky Conference for Community and Justice has selected an outstanding individual or organization in our community that exemplifies and affirms KCCJ’s mission to raise awareness and speak out for the just, fair and equal treatment of all people by promoting respect, understanding and acceptance through advocacy, education and empowerment.

“After carefully considering this year’s excellent nominees, the award committee unanimously selected Nathaniel Mission to receive this honor for its 60-plus years of support to the residents in some of the most economically depressed neighborhoods in our community. The scope of services provided by Nathaniel Mission testifies to a willingness to respond to the needs of your constituents in all aspects of their lives. Your programs are exemplary, not only for their assistance to those in need of care, but also for the opportunities provided to those who have care to give.”

Organizations that previously have received the award include IBM, Fayette County Public Schools, St Joseph Hospital, Lexmark, The Catholic Action Center, Georgetown College, Toyota Manufacturing, and Berea College.

Since the 1930’s, the Mission has provided spiritual care and includes Nathaniel United Methodist Church with three worship services a week. The mission also provides space for a God’s Pantry location, its own emergency food pantry, three hot home cooked meals a week for homeless/hungry folks, and children and youth programs including a summer day camp. Since 1979, the Mission has provided a free health clinic for those with no insurance. The clinic includes a medical clinic, a charitable pharmacy, dental clinic, optical clinic, a veterinarian clinic, and a diabetic clinic which includes nutritional counseling.
