This Saturday, two Jefferson/Oldham County churches -- Watkins United Methodist Church and St. Bernadette Catholic Church -- are joining together to help collect food for Eastern Area Community Ministries (EACM) in the annual Youth For Food collection. In addition, a school collection at St.Mary Academy is assisting the Immaculate Conception Parish Food Pantry in La Grange.
Youth For Food is held in conjunction with the Boy Scouts of America and Dare To Care. Scouts, student groups and other youth at the two churches distributed flyers in neighborhoods last Saturday, November 13. The flyers asked residents to set out canned goods and non-perishable food items on Saturday morning, November 20. The young people will return to the same neighborhoods to pick up food donations placed outside front doors and take them to the Watkins collection point, and then to EACM, located at John Knox Presbyterian Church, 9104 Westport Road. Here are this Saturday's details:
In addition to the primary collection on Saturday, students at St.MaryAcademy have been collecting donated canned goods during the school week for the Immaculate Conception Parish Food Pantry. And members of the two churches have been asked to bring canned goods to Sunday services on Nov. 14 and 21.
Youth For Food was begun by Boy Scout Troop & Cub Scout Pack 308 in 1999, at the former Mother of Good Counsel Catholic Church. In 2003, WatkinsUnitedMethodistChurch’s Youth Group & Troop/Pack 309 and youth groups at St. Thomas Episcopal Church were invited to participate. Last year, area youth collected more than 11,400 food items.
