As the waters begin to recede in western Kentucky, our United Methodist response continues to those affected by the flooding. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) provided a $10,000 grant to help with immediate needs. While assessments are still in progress, it is known that several hundred homes have been damaged or destroyed.
Bishop Lindsey Davis invites churches and individuals to help in the following ways:
1. Monetary contributions can be made to
Kentucky Conference Treasurer
7400 Floydsburg Road
Crestwood, KY 40014
2. At the present time teams are needed for clean-up, and at a later date they will be needed for home repair in the Smithland/Ledbetter (Livingston County) area.
Persons trained in Early Response and with previous experience in flood clean-up can contact: Jack Larwa, 270-625-6730, or Brad Shuck, 270-559-9511.
Housing will be at local churches, etc. Teams/individuals should be as self-sufficient as possible.
Tools to bring initially – water proof shoes/boots, masks & eye protection; hammers, crow bars and roofing shovels for nail removal. Trailers to remove debris would also be appreciated. Recommend pants, long sleeve shirts and work gloves. An up-to-date tetanus shot is also recommended.
Work needed is clean up, removing flooring, ceilings, insulation, etc; scrubbing with bleach; removal of damaged furniture and materials.
The Kentucky Conference is also collecting flood buckets. Learn how you can contribute here.
