The long-standing tradition of honoring military veterans continued at Erlanger United Methodist Church (Covington District) on Sunday, November 13, 2011. Church members invited family and friends who served in the various branches of the military services to be a part of the event during morning worship and to enjoy a terrific noon meal in our Fellowship Hall afterwards.
Photos of many of the honored members and guests, in their military uniforms, were presented in a “slide show stream” in the early part of the service. Further into the service a special prayer was lifted up by senior pastor Rev. Mark Shepherd for these folks as well as all members of the military, whether currently serving or who have served in the past to protect and preserve our American way of life.
With the military branch flags displayed in their usual window location, the service closed with another tradition. Whether serving in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, or Coast Guard, each branch was recognized individually and its members asked to come forward during a medley of their songs played by Linda Martin, Pianist/Choir Accompanist.
After the benediction and blessing of the meal, the honorees moved to the “mess hall and were first in the chow line.” The service was very well attended and the “enhanced version” of the EUMC tradition was well received by all. The military photos and the noon meal were a first this year.
An interesting statistic of the event is that 20% of the morning’s congregation were honored as being former armed services members.
