Let no senator doubt your concern.
Legislators in Frankfort are considering a new wave of proposals to permit the expansion of gambling opportunities. It is crucial for them to be clear where you stand.
A new wave of proposals to stop gambling expansion can start with emails, crest with proclamation in churches, and reach shore with phone calls and prayers.
Legislators are impressed by personalized expressions of concern from individual constituents. What stories do you know about households harmed by gambling? What negative influence on politics, communities and work ethics have you witnessed? Read church statements such as those of the Kentucky Baptist Convention, the Catholic Conference of Kentucky and the Kentucky Council of Churches.
Then let the wave begin:
Email: Summarize what you want to say in just a few sentences and then click “Take action” and communicate it to your state senator.
Church: Plan something for Sunday. Many churches mark the Transfiguration of the Lord this weekend. A key theme is the intimate relationship of Jesus to “the Law and the Prophets” (Moses and Elijah) whose message he summarized on another occasion as love of God and neighbor (Matt.22:36) Surely such love does not motivate a society to encourage individuals to lose more money taking needless risks! Rest assured, whatever good purpose gambling expansion proponents say they would accomplish, it can be implemented in another, better way.
Phone: Spread the word about the Legislative Message Line. Anyone can call 1-800-372-7181 and with the help of a courteous operator leave a brief message for a legislator, an entire committee, or a whole chamber.
Pray: Thank you for creating a counter-wave, proposing we say “no” to expanded gambling. Pray for God’s continuing help. As Julia Ward Howe wrote in words so appropriate for Transfiguration Sunday:
“In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
with a glory in his bosom that transfigures you and me.
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free
While God is marching on.”
