July 16, 2012

This week many jurisdictions within The United Methodist Church hold their quadrennial conferences. The Southeastern Jurisdiction (SEJ) Conference takes place in Lake Junaluska, NC. Kentucky Conference Bishop Lindsey Davis will preside over the opening session, which convenes Wednesday, July 18 at 9:00 a.m. (EDT). Bishop Davis is accorded the honor of presiding over the opening session by virtue of his being the longest tenured SEJ bishop.

Jurisdictional conferences are held every four years. The primary purpose of the conferences is to elect and assign bishops for their particular jurisdiction. This year the Kentucky Conference has put forth an episcopacy candidate, Rev. Debbie Wallace-Padgett. She is seeking to be one of five bishops elected in the SEJ. There are a total of 15 episcopacy candidates in the SEJ.
Rev. Wallace-Padgett is senior pastor at St. Luke UMC in Lexington, KY and has served churches in the conference since 1983. She served as the District Superintendent of the Prestonsburg District from 1998 to 2004. Rev. Wallace-Padgett is seeking to be the first female bishop elected from the Kentucky Conference.
