The prophet Isaiah wrote, "The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness- on them light has shined"

Jennifer and I want to wish all of you a joyful Christmas today.  During Advent and Christmas we celebrate God's presence in our lives- Emmanuel, God with us.  Sometimes the circumstances of our individual lives or the reality of our troubled world can make us wonder.  The events at Sandy Hook Elementary School leave us bewildered about the culture in which we live. Words fail us. In the midst of unspeakable tragedy people of faith have a way of coming together to hug, love and help those most wounded to move ahead with life. We have seen that ministry being done in Newtown in these past days. The strength to do so comes from a deep spiritual well and a bedrock belief in God's holy presence. The essential Christmas message has never depended on our circumstances.  The message affirms that the God of all creation is alongside us at times of great joy and when we experience our deepest disappointments.  So, no matter what your situation is this year, Merry Christmas. May you be surrounded by  God's loving presence in a fresh way and know how precious you are in the sight of God.

Prayer -  God of Glory, heavenly angels spoke to earthly shepherds and eternity entered time in this Bethlehem Child.  As we hear the Christmas story this year, let our fragile lives be caught up in your holy presence so that, like Jesus, we might become beacons of compassion and walk in the way of peace.
Amen.
