Buildings are really nice, but ministry can happen anywhere. That sentiment was demonstrated by the folks at Davidson Memorial in the Elizabethtown District.
Fire gutted the education building and fellowship hall building of Davidson Memorial UMC five weeks before the start of Vacation Bible School, but that did not hamper the efforts and success of the church’s VBS program. Make-shift classrooms were created, children were fed dinner each night under an outdoor canopy, the church office kitchen substituted for kitchen storage, ice chests replaced refrigerators, grills and pizza delivery made up for a lost stove, and so much more.
What no one did do was talk about what was missing – the building where most of VBS always takes place. The entire focus of VBS was on doing things for others – God loves us, so we are to love one another, and that is exactly what the volunteers and kids at Davidson Memorial did the week of July 7.
Davidson Memorial had three projects during VBS – the classes decorated drawstring backpacks and filled them with personal care items donated by church members. The backpacks were delivered by the entire VBS to Colonial House, a residential care facility in Shepherdsville. While at Colonial House the children sang songs and visited with residents while passing out the special backpacks.
Another focus for VBS and Davidson Memorial is Blessing Home – Thailand Methodist Mission. The children collected coins all week to be sent to Blessing Home to help support the ministry there. They were not finished yet, and wrapped up VBS by having a shoe drive for WaterStep to help support clean water efforts. It was a week filled with a lot of work but most importantly filled with thinking and doing for others. The kids had a lot of fun while learning the lesson each day – God loves us, so we are to love others.
VBS could not have been possible without the tremendous leadership of some very dedicated people. Davidson’s music minister, Angela Hardin led the efforts again this year with a host of volunteers who taught, led, cooked, donated, created, prayed, and worked like crazy to make it all happen.
Buildings are really nice, but ministry can happen anywhere! Amen and Amen!
