As this quadrennium draws to a close, our journey through the liturgical calendar concludes with a focus on the season of Advent. How poignant for such as time as this, that we place ourselves in a season that is about waiting!  We, in the United Methodist Church, have come to know a thing or two about waiting.  We wait for answers.  We wait for word.  We wait for the other shoe to drop. We wait for the outcomes and we wait in the tension.  Be reminded, brothers and sisters in Christ, that greater still is the reality that we are a people who experience the already as we await the not yet.

As a people who live in that tension, we recognize our need to worship together even in the waiting.  This year worship will look different than in years past. Conference will begin with an Opening Worship service with Holy Communion.  On Monday night, we will celebrate those called to serve in ministry in our Legacy of Hope Service: A Service of Commissioning, Ordination and MemorialTuesday night’s Celebration of Ministry service will honor our retiring clergy as well as celebrate the mission to which we are all called.

We will gather in June to turn our eyes to the Incarnation of Jesus Christ; the very hope of the world. We are a people who are called to Know the Hope and to Show the Hope.  That hope lies in Christ alone.  He is Immanuel:  God with us.  Christ is the Hope of the world, the Hope of our neighborhoods, and the Hope of our church.  May we step into our gathering as The Kentucky Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church, echoing Charles Wesley’s hymn in our hearts:

Come, Thou long expected Jesus, born to set Thy people free. From our fears and sins release us, let us find our rest in Thee. Israel’s strength and consolation, hope of all the earth Thou art.  Dear desire of every nation, joy of every longing heart.

SPANISH INTERPRETATION/TRANSLATION:  Spanish interpretation will be provided for many of the sessions, with headsets available in the back of the meeting room.  Later this spring, select reports will be made available in Spanish on our website as they are ready

TRANSPORTATION AND PARKING: Parking is available in an attached, covered garage for a charge (it is recommended that you park in this structure and NOT in the open-air lot next door).  All of the hotels are located on the Southbank Shuttle bus system, which provides service to and from the Northern Kentucky Convention Center and many restaurants in the area.  Bus passes (3-day passes) are available for $10.00 and can be ordered at:  You can also buy passes at registration on Sunday and Monday.

FOOD AND LOCAL ATTRACTIONS: There are many restaurants close to the Northern Kentucky Convention Center. For your convenience, maps and locations for nearby restaurants and local attractions will be available at the Information/Message Center near the registration area.  As they are scheduled, a list of special meals (seminaries, interest groups, etc.) will be updated on our website:

Serving in the community has been a long tradition for our Annual Conference.  This year, our Church Beyond will look different.  We will be packing non-perishable meals for UMC Food Ministry, who is celebrating 10 years of ministering in the Northern KY area.  They now have over 200 feeding sites and serve over 1.6 million meals a year.  It is our goal to pack 20,000 meals while we are gathered.  There will be tables set up with instructions.  You will be invited to pack meals during breaks, before and after plenary sessions and before and after worship services.  You can find out more about UMC Food Ministry at

MISSION OFFERING:   Each year, all churches in the Kentucky Conference are invited to participate in a mission offering at Annual Conference. The Mission Offering for 2020 Annual Conference will support seven mission agencies that have traditionally been supported by the Kentucky Annual Conference.  The seven mission agencies are Hillcrest Bruce (Ashland), Ida Spence (Covington), The Foundry (Bowling Green), Nathaniel Mission (Lexington), Portland Promise (Louisville), Wesley House (Louisville), and Lighthouse (Louisville). Ten percent of the offering will go to support the work of The United Methodist Church in Serbia.   Our churches in Serbia, the largest of the countries of the former Yugoslavia, have a dynamic witness among different ethnic groups and languages in that country.   United Methodists in Serbia are reaching children, youth, and the poor for Jesus Christ in the midst of difficult economic and cultural situations.    The Kentucky Conference has sent several mission trips to support the work of the church in Serbia, and we are excited to partner in this way to further support their ministry.  To support this challenge, Bishop Fairley and the members of the extended cabinet have agreed to contribute personally to the Mission Offering.  As a group, they have committed to give at least $20,000. Go to ac2020missionoffering for more information on this ministries.

YOUNG ADULT GATHERING:  Young Clergy & Laity Gathering - June 7th at 6:30pm.  Place is to be determined.  For more information contact Katie Lloyd

BLING FOR A BLESSING:  In the past we have had great success, thanks to all of you, with our Bling for a Blessing jewelry sale so we are bringing it back again this year for Annual Conference 2020. This year the proceeds will benefit the Annual Conference Children and Poverty Grant, funding which helps to provide seed money to encourage congregations and small organizations to develop creative ministries with children in their local communities.

In order to continue the success we have had in the past, we need your help! We are asking that if you have any pieces of jewelry that are in good condition and would like to donate them for our Bling for a Blessing, please bring them to your District Conference, to the Conference office in Crestwood, or with you to Annual Conference 2020

VOTING CHART:  In an effort to communicate more effectively, you will find enclosed a chart that outlines the voting privileges for our laity and clergy with their respected status.  If clergy have a question about their status, please contact Kevin Burney at

EMAIL:  This mailing is also sent out by email. We will continue to share email updates until the time of conference.  If you did not receive it by email, then we do NOT have your email address.  Please send your email information to Linda Thomas

Please hold December 8-9, 2020, for a special gathering of the Kentucky Annual Conference. The gathering will be held at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center.

In preparation for possible outcomes of General Conference 2020 (GC2020), a special December Gathering of our Annual Conference Leaders is being scheduled. These leaders will include lay and clergy members. This gathering will be a time to discuss the missional priorities of the Kentucky Annual Conference. If necessary, this gathering could be called as a special session of the Annual Conference to address any requirements coming from GC2020.

GC2020 will be held May 5-15, which is only a few weeks before our regularly scheduled Kentucky Annual Conference session. Because we do not know what legislation might be passed and given the limited time between GC2020 and our regular Annual Conference session in June, Bishop Fairley would like for these dates in December to be held.

We know that churches are preparing their 2020 budgets now, so this information will need to be considered when budgeting for Annual Conference travel and expenses.

Hotel reservations will open on Monday, March 2nd.  Go to for more information.
