This handbook seeks to clarify the unique ministry and calling of the Deacon. It is formatted in question and answer form for easier reading and in sections to best answer each need. The call of a Deacon is to servant ministry by connecting the Local Church with the community in which they serve.
It is our hope for this handbook to be a useful tool for guidance and better understanding of the varied ministry callings within the Annual Conference, the Local Church and the community. Further, it is understood the content presented here does NOT supersede any policy of the Kentucky Annual Conference or its Board of Ordained Ministry or The Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church.
Unless otherwise noted, all paragraph citations are from the 2012 edition of The Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church.
More detailed information is available from The United Methodist Church General Board of Higher Education and Ministry at www.gbhem.org.
Many thanks are given to Rev. Susan Skaggs and Rev. Debra Massengale for their careful compilation, patient revision and persistent effort in seeing this project come to fruition!
Grace and peace,
Order of Deacons
