Rev. Dr. Richard Slinger

United Theological Seminary is pleased to offer its 9th Annual Preaching Retreat on August 9-11 at the seminary’s campus at 4501 Denlinger Rd., Dayton, OH, with Dr. Luke Powery as guest lecturer.

This seminar’s theme is the “Gospel for Today.” Obviously "gospel" is a key term in Mark. "For today" is a way of thinking about these themes in Mark and how they connect to our contemporary scene and context.  How do we speak/preach into the silence or voids, address the squabbles and conflicts that happen in the world or church, and approach a world of great suffering and violence?  “Speaking into the silence" helps us look for those who do not speak, and consider why Jesus told folks not to speak. "Squabbles" has to do with the conflicts going on, even within the disciples. "Suffering" has a great focus in Mark with the passion of Christ but also links to how the disciples will suffer as told by Jesus and other stories of suffering and healing in the text.
