Global Ministries
The General Board of Global Ministries is the global mission agency of The United Methodist Church, its annual conferences, missionary conferences, and local congregations. The work of mission in virtually any context involves relationships--interactions in the name of Jesus Christ between and among persons and organizations.
Purpose, Vision, and Goals
Purpose: Connecting the Church in mission.
Vision: The General Board of Global Ministries equips and transforms people and places for God's mission around the world.
Four Mission Goals:
- Make disciples of Jesus Christ.
- Strengthen, develop, and renew Christian congregations and communities.
- Alleviate human suffering.
- Seek justice, freedom, and peace.
Connecting the Church in Mission
A major responsibility of Global Ministries is to connect the various parts of the Church as United Methodists engage in global mission. The aim of Global Ministries is to be a biblically rooted, historically informed, and organizationally flexible means of spreading the good news.
One of GBGM's major ministry outreach initiatives is The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) which is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to alleviating human suffering around the globe. UMCOR's work reaches people in more than 80 countries, including the United States. They provide humanitarian relief when war, conflict, or natural disaster disrupt life to such an extent that communities are unable to recover on their own.
UMCOR is a ministry of The United Methodist Church, and their goal is to assist the most vulnerable persons affected by crisis or chronic need without regard to their race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. They believe all people have God-given worth and dignity.
While UMCOR cooperates with other aid organizations to extend its reach. Its most important partners are the people they serve. They are confident that successful solutions to emergency or chronic conditions begin with the affected population. UMCOR provides these survivors not only temporary relief but long-term education, training, and support.
UMCOR spends 100 percent of designated donations on the projects our donors specify. When UMCOR donors give their time, money, and supplies, they join UMCOR as the hands and feet of Christ.
