KAC staff and volunteers descended on the Northern Kentucky Convention Center on Sunday to set up for Monday’s start of Annual Conference.
Everything went according to plan – and the storms even held off, a blessing for the outdoor events!
The volunteers and staff unloaded a truckload of supplies Sunday morning, then spent the bulk of the day setting up in various rooms of the spacious convention center. Many also gathered for lunch and a brief worship service.
Rev. Kevin Burney, director of ministerial services and assistant to the bishop, delivered a short message, telling the roughly three dozen staff members and volunteers present that it was all right – even normal – to feel overwhelmed before Annual Conference. Even people who have been part of the organizational team for years often feel that way, he said.
The service concluded with people taking Holy Communion.
Several events took place Sunday evening, ahead of the official start. A reconciling Ministry Worship Service, which included dinner, was held at Clifton UMC, across the river in Cincinnati. It culminated with Holy Communion.
The Run for the Children 5K was held at Lunken Playfield in Cincinnati – and yes, the rain held off! Matthew Wallace was the overall winner in 16:16. The first female finisher was 12-year-old Madelyn Strong.
About 75-100 people walked, ran, or walked and ran the out-and-back course near historic Lunken Airport, adjacent to the Ohio River.
Meanwhile, the Young Adult Gathering of clergy and laity met at the Northern Kentucky University Wesley Foundation for fun and fellowship.
Annual Conference officially begins Monday. Registration opens at 8 a.m. in the convention center lobby. The Opening Worship with Holy Communion begins at 9:15 a.m. Bishop Leonard Fairley will deliver the message. Don’t forget that worship services and plenary sessions will be live-streamed. The clergy executive session is the only meeting that will not be streamed.
