Loucon Training & Retreat Center and  Aldersgate Camp & Retreat Center have been forced to cancel their 2020 traditional summer camping seasons because of continued social distancing in response to COVID-19.

In addition, Mission Basecamp at Kavanaugh Conference & Retreat Center has been canceled.

“We have spent much time in prayer and conversation on the impact of COVID-19. The concern for our campers and their families, our understanding of increased guidelines, financial impact, and the likelihood of a limited number of camper spots that would be available due to the virus led us to the realization that this would be a difficult season in which to offer a high-quality, safe experience for our campers,” Warren Hopper, Executive Director of the Kentucky Annual Conference’s Camp & Retreat Ministries, said in a statement.

“It is important that we maintain the trust we have established with our campers and their families. It is important that we ensure their safety and that we do our part to flatten the curve,” added Hopper, who also is Loucon Director.

Dave Cohn, Director of Aldersgate, also issued a statement: “It is with a heavy heart that I announce the cancelation of the 2020 summer camp season.  However, I am thankful for the movement of God through Christian camping, for the ways God will work through this season, and for our Aldersgate Camp Family.”

Loucon and Aldersgate have both informed their summer staff hires that camps are canceled. Loucon had hired 44 and Aldersgate 20 young adults. Deans and day camp leaders also have been notified.

“Please join us in prayer for our 2020 summer staff. They were preparing to point campers to God, to reach them where they are, and to help them grow. Now they are left trying to determine their summer plans,” Hopper said, adding that “they are an awesome group of young adults who deeply love Jesus who were ready to share the love and message of God” with the young campers.

Hopper said the hope is for Loucon and Aldersgate to “return strong’’ in 2021 with summer camp, and staff hired for this summer will be welcome in 2021 if they are interested in returning. Both camps intend to remain intentional in keeping in contact with the 2020 hires.

The camps are providing further details to families that have already registered their camper(s) that will include refund information. Aldersgate and Loucon ask that you stay tuned for some new summer family opportunities! Each camp will begin promoting what they have in store in the coming weeks.

Loucon is located near Leitchfield and Aldersgate is located near Ravenna. Kavanaugh is in Crestwood.
