Mission Base Camp at Kavanaugh Camp and Retreat Center

May 11, 2015

Real change doesn't usually come by grand sweeping measures, it comes by individuals willing to give of themselves, their time and their talents.

Mission Base Camp is a new exciting endeavor that gives teens, 6th grade and up, a variety of opportunities to do mission work. Teens will be based at Kavanaugh Camp and Retreat Center in Oldham County, Kentucky and from there they will venture out into the community to do hands-on mission work.

Teens will get to help communities in the surrounding areas by their acts of kindness and selflessness.

Recognizing that this kind of opportunity will be best attended when schools are not in session, the normal operating time will be from the first week of June through the first week of August. Groups will usually arrive Sunday afternoon/evening and depart Friday morning. Groups can arrive later or leave earlier, but the weekly rate will be the same. Our goal is to make this a year round program so other dates are also possible. Many School districts, for example, have breaks in the fall and spring which are ideal times for mission experiences.

Generally, Mission Teams will arrive Sunday evening and depart Friday morning. Monday is reserved for groups to work at Kavanaugh and to receive an orientation regarding the various worksites. Tuesday - Thursday groups work full or partial days at some of the agencies listed later in this document.

A typical week might look like:
Monday - Orientation and work at Kavanaugh
Tuesday - Apple Patch
Wednesday – Lighthouse
Thursday - Portland Promise Center
Friday - Departure and possible tours before heading home

During Mission Base Camp, Kavanaugh will have other activities going on, but groups can schedule use of camp facilities/equipment around the camp schedule. Options include:
gaga ball pit
volleyball court
basketball court
Soccer field
Baseball field
Hiking
Chapel
Sports equipment like Frisbees, balls, etc,
Campfire rings
