Important United Methodist General Conference 2024 update

May 11, 2023
By Rev. Darren Brandon

General Conference is scheduled for April 23-May 3, 2024, at the Charlotte Convention Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. Initially planned for 2020, it's been postponed three times due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In March 2023, the Judicial Council ruled that annual conferences were "permitted to hold elections to fill vacancies in the General Conference delegation due to death, resignations, or otherwise, up to the maximum number of allocated delegates, provided vacancies cannot be filled with reserve delegates."

This General Conference 2024 update was delayed to seek additional clarification on Judicial Council decision 1472. The Kentucky Annual Conference is moving ahead with plans for an election at this year's Annual Conference in Owensboro, Kentucky, June 4-7. The conference will elect three clergy and three lay delegates to give us full representation for the General and Jurisdictional conferences.

Click here to learn more about the process. Please share this at church this Sunday and help us get the word out about this update. Profiles are due by noon EDT Thursday, May 18, 2023. You must submit your profile by using the electronic submission process.

Thank you for your timely response. Profiles will be published on the conference website by Saturday, May 20, 2023, in order to comply with the Standing Rules.

One additional acknowledgment is essential to make. While the Kentucky Annual Conference will proceed with an election this year, it is understood that there are varying interpretations of Judicial Council decision 1472. Additional clarifications may come that impact the decision to vote and may even disallow the election. Be that as it may, the conference is proceeding with a vote, and eligible persons are encouraged to participate in the process.
