Buechel UMC Opens Family Literacy Center
February 09, 2012
Buechel United Methodist Church, along with Toyota Motor Corp. and the Jefferson County Public School system, held a ribbon cutting celebrating the opening of the Toyota Family Literacy Program. The program will be housed at Buechel UMC and is a joint effort with the National Center for Family Literacy. The church is located at 2817 Hikes Lane in Louisville.
The partnership will foster new educational opportunities for immigrant families by offering students from predominantly Spanish-speaking countries the chance to learn English at the same time as their parents. The program is open to students where English is not the primary language of the family. It offers both daytime and afternoon classes to accommodate parents' schedules.
Louisville District Superintendent, Rev. Rebecca Curry, and JCPS Superintendent, Dr. Donna Hargens, spoke at the opening ceremony.
Buechel UMC pastor, Rev. Kevin Griffin, envisioned his church going out into the community and making a change. Through this partnership, Buechel UMC is definitely helping to make a change for the neighborhood.
