Golden Disciples - Food for Thought

Scripture
John 21:18-19: Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go. (He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, “Follow me.”

Thought
We all dread losing control over our lives; we fear not being able to serve God as active disciples, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting the sick, etc.  Some of us feel we have “let down” God when we can no longer serve God’s people in an active way.  But Jesus reassures us that even in our infirmity, in our extreme helplessness, we WILL continue to serve God in some mysterious way.

Prayer
Dear God, please help us believe than even when we can no longer help others in your name, when we are the ones being served, our very helplessness and powerlessness glorifies you!

Senior Ministry Tip
When visiting people who are in hospital, nursing home, or even confined to their own homes due to illness or frailty, leave a copy of the above scripture and let them know that even though the secular world values action, Jesus assures us that gracious acceptance of our powerlessness and need for help will glorify God.
