Dr. Clarenda Phillips Elected Vice-President of GBCS
The General Board of Church and Society gathered at Lake Junaluska Conference & Retreat Center last week for its organizational meeting. The board elected members of its executive committee, including Dr. Clarenda Phillips as vice-president, for the 2012-2016 quadrennium. Dr. Phillips, an ordained deacon in the Kentucky Annual Conference, is a professor of sociology at Morehead State University.
Suggestions for the executive committee were put forward during a July nominations meeting following the Jurisdictional Conferences that elected board members from across the denomination. Dr. Phillips appreciates the opportunity to represent the Kentucky Annual Conference on GBCS and hopes to build partnerships that advocate for, and minister to, those that are most affected by global social problems.
Bishop Robert Hoshibata of the Desert Southwest Conference was elected president of the Board of Directors. Jim Winkler, who has served as GBCS’s chief executive officer since 2000, was re-elected as General Secretary for another year.
