Local Young Adult Heads to Philippines for Global Convocation

She is excited about attending the convocation but the 22 hours of flight time is an area of concern for her, although she "knows that God will make everything work out fine."
“The theme of the event is Crossroads, which symbolizes the place where we come together, experience growth and change and go out into our church and world to change them,” said Michael Ratliff, Associate General Secretary at GBOD and head of Young People’s Ministries.
Twenty-five different workshops will prepare participants to more effectively live out their response to God as they move beyond the crossroads that brings the group together. An “Open Space” experience will provide them with a place to connect with others who care about the same issues and allow them to make plans for future leadership opportunities around those topics.
The Legislative Assembly will focus on a number of petitions submitted by young people for consideration on topics from global warming to same-sex marriage. The assembly is designed to give UMC young people a collective voice and a direct avenue for submission of supported proposals to the General Conference. Petitions discussed at the Legislative Assembly could find their way onto the docket for the 2016 General Conference.
Participants will ride in jeepneys, the iconic local form of Filipino transportation, and learn some Filipino history, culture and language with a “fiesta,” a visit and cultural dinner in the Intramuros of Manila and visits to local congregations.
Nearly 400 United Methodist youth, young adults and adult leaders from 34 countries will begin gathering on July 15 at the Global Young People’s Convocation and Legislative Assembly in the Philippines to worship and pray together and to discuss the future of their church.
The quadrennial event which begins July 16, is organized by Young People’s Ministries division of the General Board of Discipleship (GBOD) and will be held at the Center for Community Transformation retreat center in Tagaytay, Philippines.
Each Central and Jurisdictional conference is allocated five youth, five young adults, and two adult workers as voting delegates. In addition, twelve non-voting delegate spaces are available to each Central and Jurisdictional conference. One of the young adults representing the Southeastern Jurisdiction is Sheryl Farfan Tello from the Kentucky Annual Conference.
