Spiritual Preparation and Response around GC 2019

December 21, 2018
As we go towards the Special Called Session of General Conference 2019, the Pennyrile district has put together a few ideas of things we can do to help us move into and past the session.

Before GC2019

Spiritual Preparation

1. Daily Prayer - https://umcprays.org/
  • Pause and pray for our church’s mission and way forward daily for four minutes from 2:23 through 2:26 a.m. or p.m. in their own time zone OR at another time.  This is because the Special Session of General Conference will be held February 23 through February 26, 2019.
  • Pray using a weekly prayer calendar that will be posted on the UMCPrays.org website from June 2, 2018, through the end of February 2019. The calendar will list a unique cluster of names each week. The names will balance United States bishops and delegates with Central Conference bishops and delegates. It will also include General Secretaries, Commission on a Way Forward members, the Commission of the General Conference and the staff of the General Conference.
  • Prayer for Kentucky Annual Conference Delegates to General Conference:
Clergy Delegates                                            Laity Delegates
Dr. Bill T. Arnold                                              Mr. Lew Nicholls
Rev. Tom Grieb                                               Mrs. Jan Brown-Thompson
Rev. Dr. Maxie Dunnam                                  Mrs. Linda U. King
Rev. Dr. Iosmar Alvarez                                  Mr. John Rees Denham
Rev. Dr. Jean Hawxhurst                                Mr. Michael B. Watts

Alternate Clergy Delegates                           Alternate Laity Delegates
Rev. Julie Love                                                 Mr. Josiah Brock
Rev. Dr. David Grout                                        Mr. Paul Whalen

Delegate contact info is available at: https://www.kyumc.org/newsdetail/general-conference-delegation-contact-information-11582859

2. Weekly Fasting - https://umcprays.org/
  • Engage in a weekly Wesleyan 24-hour fast from Thursday after dinner to Friday mid-afternoon.  Those who have health situations causing food fasts to be unadvisable might consider fasting from social media, emails or another daily activity.

3. Scripture Reading
  • Galatians 5:13-24
  • How am I allowing the Holy Spirit to guide me?
  • Am I being carried by my selfish desires?

4. Things to Ponder in preparation for General Conference 2019
  • There WILL BE wounds.  We encourage you to be in prayer for how the decision(s) will be communicated.
  • There WILL BE anger and disappointment.
  • We encourage you to be in prayer for how we can continue to show love to those who are angry and/or disappointed.
  • We encourage you to be in prayer for how you might deal with your own anger or disappointment.
  • EVERYONE is valued and loved by God.  Regardless of what is decided, we must remember that we are all God’s children and deserve to be treated accordingly.
  • Consider how Jesus responded to the people around him.  What did he do to show love to those who loved him and those that hated him?
  • As you gather around the table for Holy Communion, seek peace with those at the table who believe differently than you.
  • As you celebrate or reaffirm your baptismal covenant, remember that those you disagree with are beloved children of God just as you are.
  • REMEMBER our mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of world.  That transformation must be at work within you if it is to be at work through you.

5. District Prayer Service for Clergy and Laity to be in prayer and worship together
