On Sunday, April 25, the Lighthouse United Methodist Community Center had a groundbreaking ceremony for the much needed building expansion. Over fifty people, including community and church leaders, gathered to worship and to show their appreciation to all who helped make this vision a reality. The Lighthouse has raised over $800,000 of the $1 million needed to complete the expansion. In April 2009, the James Graham Brown Foundation gave Lighthouse a matching challenge grant of $268,000. That grant was quite a boost to the fund raising effort.
The Lighthouse has been serving at-risk youth and adults in the Newburg area in Louisville for over ten years, and during that time the facilities have been stretched thin. Presently, all programs are at full capacity with a waiting list. Once the expansion is complete, the Lighthouse will be able to greatly increase the number of people that can be served.
